Thermal Fluctuations in Non-Equilibrium Thermodynamics

چکیده
Thermal fluctuations in fluids and fluid mixtures in stationary nonequilibrium states are spatially long ranged. This long-ranged nature of the non-equilibrium fluctuations is caused by a coupling between hydrodynamic modes through the non-equilibrium fluxes or gradients. The phenomena are discussed with some illustrative examples in fluids and fluid mixtures.

Fluctuation-induced pressures in fluids in thermal nonequilibrium steady states.
Correlations in fluids in nonequilibrium steady states are long range. Hence, finite-size effects have important consequences in the nonequilibrium thermodynamics of fluids. One consequence is that nonequilibrium temperature fluctuations induce nonequilibrium Casimir-like pressures proportional to the square of the temperature gradient. Hence, fluctuations cause a breakdown of the concept of lo...

Simply put, fluctuation theorems connect the probabilities for quantities like work, heat or particle number in an experiment to those that would be observed in a time-reversed set-up. Although these relations only hold when both the forward and backward processes start out in thermal equilibrium, they apply to systems that may be subsequently driven arbitrarily far from equilibrium. They are n...
متن کاملOverlap fluctuations in glass-forming liquids.
We analyze numerically thermal fluctuations of the static overlap between equilibrium configurations in a glass-forming liquid approaching the glass transition. We find that the emergence of slow dynamics near the onset temperature correlates with the development of non-Gaussian probability distributions of overlap fluctuations, measured using both annealed and quenched definitions. Below a cri...
متن کاملValidity of the zero-thermodynamic law in off-equilibrium coupled harmonic oscillators
In order to describe the thermodynamics of the glassy systems it has been recently introduced an extra parameter, the effective temperature which generalizes the fluctuation-dissipation theorem (FDT) to off-equilibrium systems and supposedly describes thermal fluctuations around the aging state. Using this concept we investigate the applicability of a zeroth thermodynamic law for non-equilibriu...
متن کاملCALT 68-2845 Out of equilibrium: understanding cosmological evolution to lower-entropy states
Despite the importance of the Second Law of Thermodynamics, it is not absolute. Statistical mechanics implies that, given sufficient time, systems near equilibrium will spontaneously fluctuate into lower-entropy states, locally reversing the thermodynamic arrow of time. We study the time development of such fluctuations, especially the very large fluctuations relevant to cosmology. Under fairly...
